ABOUT MARTÍ

Martí Mitjavila is a young jazz clarinetist and saxophonist currently based in Amsterdam. He began exploring jazz at an early age, inspired by his father's record collection. Martí holds a Bachelor and a Masters Degree from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He has studied with renowned musicians such as Ben van Gelder, Simon Rigter, Joris Roelofs, Jasper Blom, George Coleman, Dick Oatts and Reggie Workman.

Throughout his career, Martí has performed across Europe at notable events, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, the Bimhuis Rough Diamonds Series, and jazz festivals in Breda, Heerde, and Vic.

He leads the Martí Mitjavila Trio, which delves into lesser-known pieces from the Great American Songbook and showcases Martí's original compositions. Their latest album "Playtime" (The Changes, 2025) puts the clarinet in the center, shining light on an underrepresented instrument in the bebop and hard bop traditions and claiming its validity as a vehicle of expression.

Martí's achievements include winning the Best Soloist Award at the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award in 2022, the Grachtenfestival Jazz Competition in 2022, and the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours in 2019 with his trio.

Martí is also a founding member of The Fried Seven, the renowned trad-jazz ensemble which in 2024 released their debut album 'Late to the Party' under Rivermont Records.

Marti Mitjavila Trio - Playtime

This album is a collection of songs that I love and 3 compositions of mine, one about each member of the band. The album title "Playtime" suggests that behind all the technical complexities and explorations of the music, there is the goal of creating a sense of playfulness. The band's music is inspired by artists such as Duke, Dizzy, Stevie Wonder and Sonny Rollins, who were artists who exuded joy onstage and in their music. The goal of the album is to capture that fun and, hopefully, give the same feeling to the listener.
